Types of Power Problems

Electrical equipment in our domestic and work environments are at risk from power related problems.

The damage caused by power problems to computers, networks and other sensitive equipment can vary from a small disruption to complete equipment failure and destruction. Different products have been developed to deal with the specific power problems shown in the diagrams below.

Clean Power

This is the ideal mode for all electrical equipment.

Surges

Power surges can result in permanent damage to hardware and other electrical equipment.

Suggested solution: powerline conditioner or UPS with voltage regulation.

Sags / Brownouts

These are short term, low voltage brownouts, created by large loads, lightning, utility switching or equipment failure. Sags/brownouts cause hardware crashes and occasional hardware damage.

Suggested solution: powerline conditioner or UPS with under and over voltage protection.

Spikes

Also called transients or instantaneous surges. Spikes cause data corruption, data lockups and significant hardware damage.

Suggested solution: UPS with surge suppressor, mains spike or filter.

RF Noise

Creates a rough and jagged sinewave. RF noise can even be generated by normal computer operation. It causes keyboard lockups, program freezes and data corruption.

Suggested solution: UPS and noise filter or RF mains filter.

Waveform Distortion

Most common is the harmonic distortion, which causes a doubling of the normal sinewave. This condition can be triggered by factory equipment or utility power.

Suggested solution: true on-line double conversion UPS.

Frequency Vibrations

Mainly caused by back up generators taking over from utility power. Only on-line UPS systems can rectify this problem.

Suggested solution: true on-line double conversion UPS.

Complete Outage / Blackout

Described as 0 volts condition for longer than half a cycle. Unprotected networks suffer badly during an outage.

Suggested solution: true on-line double conversion UPS.
